Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom (Dzongkha language with sub-titles) CERTIFICATE PG RUNNING TIME 110 MINUTES START TIME 7.45 PM |
|
When city teacher and aspiring singer Ugyen relocates to one of the most remote villages in Bhutan, the scene seems set for a familiar fish-out-of-water story. But Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom rewards viewers with genuinely felt and universal human drama.
Slowly but surely, Ugyen begins to adjust to living a sparse life. He brightens the lives of his students, who adore him, and he learns a traditional song from the lovely Saldon who sings while sitting amidst the clouds. Ugyen’s transforming influence is felt even by Asha, the village chief, who begins to sing again, something he hasn’t done since his wife died. When it’s finally time for Ugyen to leave the village, it’s a bittersweet farewell that offers hope that he’ll one day return. This charming, quietly funny culture-clash film, about a young teacher in Bhutan who is posted to a remote mountain village, is a thoughtful exploration of happiness and community values. British Film Institute While the simple plot is predictable, the scenery is gorgeous, the setting is authentic and the non-professional actors using villagers in supporting roles) are unaffected and utterly charming. The Fabelmans CERTIFICATE 15 RUNNING TIME 151 MINUTES START TIME 7.45 PM |
|
The film is a semi-autobiographical story loosely based on Spielberg's adolescence and first years as a filmmaker told through the fictional Sammy Fabelman. Growing up in post-World War II era Arizona, young Sammy aspires to become a filmmaker as he reaches adolescence, but soon discovers a shattering family secret and explores how the power of films can help him see the truth.
Steven Spielberg’s utterly beguiling fictionalised movie-memoir is his new adventure in Panglossian optimism, and offers us a stunning critical insight into his own work and how and why artists cauterise childhood pain and rewrite their youth. The Guardian It's charming and it's funny, a sunny disposition offsetting the sorrow. It's one big broken heart, but throughout there is vibrancy. Empire |

She Said CERTIFICATE 15 RUNNING TIME 129 MINUTES START TIME 7.45 PM |
|
The New York Times journalists Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor publish a report that exposes sexual abuse allegations against powerful Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. The shocking story also serves as a launching pad for the #MeToo movement, shattering decades of silence around the subject of sexual assault and harassment. The film balances the investigative work with the lives of the two reporters as they become consumed with the story.
The movie has a frankness and clarity of purpose to defy even the edgiest troll, a sturdy pulse embodied by a coolly furious Mulligan. Financial Times An exciting and often powerful piece of mainstream film-making that allows its heroes to emerge as normal people who make everyday mistakes. Highly recommended. Irish Times |

See How They Run CERTIFICATE 12 RUNNING TIME 98 MINUTES START TIME 7.45 PM |
|
In the West End of 1950s London, plans for a movie version of a smash-hit play come to an abrupt halt after a pivotal member of the crew is murdered. When world-weary Inspector Stoppard (Sam Rockwell) and eager rookie Constable Stalker (Saoirse Ronan) take on the case, the two find themselves thrown into a puzzling whodunit within the glamorously sordid theatre underground, investigating the mysterious homicide at their own peril.
...a likeably silly and relentlessly camp whodunnit spoof centred on Agatha Christie’s long-running play, The Mousetrap. Guardian While it's no masterpiece, it's a solid, fun, flashy, meta whodunit with a deliriously enjoyable soundtrack. Rotten Tomatoes |
