The Great Escaper CERTIFICATE 12A RUNNING TIME 96 MINUTES START TIME 7.45 PM |
|
The Great Escaper is based on the true story of 89-year-old British World War 2 Royal Navy veteran Bernard Jordan who "broke out" of his nursing home to attend the 70th anniversary D-day commemorations in France in June 2014.
Caine and Jackson and their ineffable class give this film some real grit: it’s a wonderful last hurrah for Jackson and there is something moving and even awe-inspiring in seeing these two British icons together. Guardian A moving and surprisingly nuanced drama offering far more than flag-waving nostalgia. Superb performances from Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson. Empire Online |

Oppenheimer CERTIFICATE 15 RUNNING TIME 180 MINUTES START TIME 7.30 PM |
|
A dramatisation of the life story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who had a large hand in the development of the atomic bomb, thus helping to end World War 2. We see his life from university days to the period after the war when his fame saw him embroiled in political machinations which resulted in him being put on trial for his supposed communist ties in the past. All the while he struggles to come to terms with what it meant to change the history of the world for the sake of winning World War 2.
Oppenheimer is a dense and intricate period piece, playing out in a tangle of timelines. It weaves together courtroom drama, romantic liaisons, laboratory epiphanies and lecture hall personality cults. Guardian |
